Public Sector

Building a strong and trusted public service

The importance of a well-led, smoothly running public sector cannot be underestimated. Not only does it deliver on the policy agenda of the elected Government, but it is also responsible for providing essential services such as health, education, police and others, in a financially sustainable manner.

As the largest employer in many jurisdictions, this sector also offers a unique environment in which to work and to lead. And for professionals considering moving into or up through its ranks, the public sector offers diverse opportunities to work in complex, purpose-driven and often highly rewarding roles.

To ensure the public sector can deliver on expectations and meet the ever-changing needs of the community, the right approach must be taken to finding and appointing talent to senior leadership roles. “Managing these types of appointments requires an excellent understanding of the standards and recruitment processes that exist within the public sector,” says Jennifer. “Personally, I find it helps being able to combine the experience of working alongside senior public servants in my previous careers, with a talent network of that spans both the public and private sectors.”

Appointing the right future leaders

A high performing public sector is not possible without actively developing a pipeline of diverse and experienced leaders to guide its performance; and to navigate it complexities which include -

  • The need to build, or in some cases restore a culture of trust and integrity in the public sector
  • Managing change and cultural integration when departmental changes occur
  • Working collaboratively and building partnerships across relevant industries and other external stakeholders
  • Making a difference in what feels like a shorter political cycle, heightened by social media and the issues that mainstream media choose to give airtime to.

To achieve this, the quality of senior public sector appointments is critical. It requires leaders with the grit and humility to withstand the scrutiny of their decisions, performance and the impact of their work; and the skills, experience tenacity to deliver on what is expected.

Gerard Daniels has supported many successful public sector appointments and is well placed to support the sector’s future leaders. We continue to work closely with public sector agencies and bodies to develop leadership capacity, top team effectiveness, succession planning and more.

Future public sector leaders must be adept at driving wide-ranging reform as required by their political leaders. They must also be able to effectively collaborate and build better partnerships with communities and across industry.
